It is with deep sadness and heartfelt respect that we announce the passing of Rufus B. Smith on March 20, 2026, at Spring Creek Rehab in Murray, Kentucky. Born on January 5, 1939, to the late John S. and Louise Jackson Smith, Rufus lived a life defined by dedication, humility, and unwavering love for his family.
Rufus devoted many years of his professional life as a Heating and Air Engineer at the Kentucky State Penitentiary. He took immense pride in his work, earning the respect of colleagues through his reliability, skill, and strong work ethic. His career reflected not only technical excellence but also a quiet commitment to service that left a lasting impression on those around him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rufus will be most fondly remembered as a devoted family man. He is lovingly survived by his sons, Michael Smith and his wife Kristie, and David Smith and his wife Gina, all of Princeton, Kentucky. He took great joy in his role as a grandfather to Lacey and Ryleigh Smith and as a great-grandfather to Nealie Vied. His family was the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Rufus is also survived by his brothers, Richard Smith of Parker, Colorado, and Johnny Smith of Princeton, Kentucky; his sisters, Rose Carner of Caldwell County and Patricia Jenkins of Christian County; and a host of nieces and nephews who will deeply feel his absence. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sonia S. Hackney Smith, as well as his brothers Charles, Sam, and Shellie Smith, and his sister Linda Brindley.
Rufus found great peace and happiness in the outdoors. Whether tending to his yard or simply enjoying the fresh air, he appreciated life’s simple pleasures. His quiet strength, gentle nature, and steady presence will be remembered by all who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Morgan’s Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, with burial to follow in Rowland Cemetery in Caldwell County.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Smith family during this difficult time. May his memory bring comfort and peace to all who mourn his passing.
